How to make easy to peel hard boiled eggs in the instant potHard boiled eggs have always given me trouble – until I learned how to cook them in my instant pot, and now making hard boiled eggs in the instant pot is just about the easiest meal prep we do each week. Here are my quick and easy “how to” steps for cooking hard boiled eggs in the instant pot.

The trouble I always had before was with peeling the eggs, and the shells sticking and splintering into a million pieces while I’m meanwhile gouging the egg white trying to get the shell off. Or the other problem I had was with them turning a weird green color around the yolk. Do you know that green ring I’m talking about? Gross.

Well no more. Like any other instant pot newbie, the first official thing I made in my instant pot was hard boiled eggs. I was pretty intimidated by my new instant pot, and everyone said to try cooking eggs first, so I did! There are a lot of tutorials out there, and lots of different ways to cook them, but the one I found that works the best for me is the 5-5-5 method.

With this method of hard boiling eggs, each step takes 5 minutes.

Step 1

Place the steamer trivet into the bottom of the instant pot. This is the metal ring with the feet and handles that came with your instant pot. You’ll want to put the feet facing down, and let the handles rest along the sides of the inner pot.

Step 2

Add 1 cup of water to the pot – it will sit below the steamer/trivet.

Step 3

Add your eggs to the instant pot. Place them gently on top of the metal trivet.

Step 4

Close the lid, twist it to lock the lid, then make sure the valve is set to sealing.

Step 5

Press the pressure cook button. Then set the time for 5 minutes. That’s it. From here, just wait for the pot to start coming to pressure – the display panel will say it is on. Once it comes to pressure it will start to count down the time from 5 minutes.

Step 6

Once the eggs have cooked for 5 minutes, the instant pot will beep (mine beeps about 10 times, which is enough to let you know wherever you are in the house, and just enough to nearly be annoying with the number of beeps — ha!). Just let those eggs sit in the pot for 5 more minutes after it beeps – you will see the timer counting up now. Once it sits for five minutes then you’re on to the last-ish step.

Step 7

Open the lid and carefully take the eggs out of the pot and put them in an ice bath. I fill a big mixing bowl with ice and water, and use a large skimmer to scoop them gently into the ice bath. Then, just let them chill in the ice bath for 5 minutes.

Step 8

Take the eggs out of the ice bath, and peel! The shells will come off so easily using this instant pot hard boiling method.

From there, store the peeled eggs in the refrigerator for up to a week.

So as you can see – it’s very simple! This hard boiling method has the eggs in the instant pot  under pressure for 5 minutes, resting in the pot for 5 minutes, then cooling them in an ice bath for 5 minutes. Easy!
