Perfect for a post-workout refuel or as an afternoon snack, this chocolate protein smoothie is a healthy way to satisfy your chocolate cravings.
I’ve been relying a lot on smoothies lately, and this is one I know you’ll love as much as I do.
This chocolate protein smoothie has been one I’ve kept coming back to recently, especially when I need to satisfy a late afternoon chocolate craving. It’s also really helped curb my hunger in the late afternoon. Recently I had noticed that I was staying hungry following my afternoon snack, and I caught myself on several occasions snacking a lot more after this all the way through to dinnertime because I was just plain hungry.
I think it’s good to reevaluate your meals and snacks from time to time if you find things aren’t working or if you just need to shake things up a bit to change up your routine. Especially if you notice a change in your hunger or activity level.
That’s what I had noticed myself — I was so hungry in the afternoon that I just kept snacking. I decided to add a litte more protein to my meals and snacks, and whipping up a smoothie with protein powder was one change I made.
I love blending up this chocolate protein smoothie because it’s simple and quick to put together. You probably already have most of the ingredients on hand.
The one thing you may need to find is a good protein powder that you like. I found a great plant-based protein powder that I like which has no added sugar, sweeteners, or other flavors — just protein. I like this because it’s versatile and I can add different flavors to my smoothies without needing to have several different protein powders on hand.
For this smoothie, I used the Nutiva hemp protein powder which has no added sugar, sweeteners, or other flavor. I’ve been using it to make all my smoothies lately and I just love it!
To make this chocolate protein smoothie, all you need to do is blend together a few ingredients and you’re ready to go.
You’ll need:
frozen banana
strawberries
milk (almond or other)
protein powder
cocoa powder
ice
optional: maple syrup
You can make this a vegan smoothie by using a non-dairy milk and a plant-based protein powder.
I love the combination of banana and strawberry with the chocolate in this protein smoothie. Banana makes the smoothie thick and satisfying, while strawberries round out the flavor and, if you’re using a hemp protein powder like I do, they also help your body grab on to the iron in the hemp powder. This is a great bonus if you’re vegetarian or vegan and don’t get iron from animal sources.
I’ve been using this recipe as a base for other smoothies by blending in other fruits such as pineapple, mango, blueberries, and peaches. I’ve also turned this into a green smoothie by adding in a couple of big handfuls of spinach (this gives you more fiber and iron too!).
This smoothie recipe is great to start you on finding flavor combinations you love! And, you can’t beat a healthy chocolate treat either!
